What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):
There were two major varieties of the 1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. The most common variety is simply the 'Normal Date' variety which depicts no major errors or special features - as depicted above. The other major variety is the 1822/1 overdate error which features an 1822 date stuck over an 1821 date in the die - which resulted in a '2' over '1' on the coins. Parts of the underlying '1' can be seen between the base and center of the '2' on the right side as depicted by the upper-right arrow below. The easiest way to identify this coin is to note how the last '2' is much thicker and bolder than the first '2' in the date - particularly the base and the curl on the tip of the '2' is much thicker. These 1822/1 features are depicted by the arrows in the example image below:
